What the roadbike expert says:
The Alpe-Adria region (the 3 border area of Carinthia, Slovenia, and Italy) was my preferred training area when I was an active professional cyclist. I usually started from my tavern (Taverna Paco, peterwrolich.at) at the Faakersee lake. From there, it’s a flat ride to Tarvis, then, after a quick cappuccino, the first, not so steep ascent takes you to Passo Predil. This is a lovely climb, only the last 3 km are somewhat more difficult. Just right to warm up! From the highest point on the Predil, there is then a wonderful long downhill section into the picturesque Socatal valley in Slovenia. This is a paradise not only for bikers, but also for canoeists from all over the world. Then, the route continues for 20 km, lightly downhill, along the Soca, with its turquoise blue water, to the Vrsic pass. The road is one of the most beautiful in the Alps. Lots of serpentine bends, not so steep, but in a perfect rhythm to ride. When you arrive at the highest point of the Vrsic, you get a fantastic view of the Karawanks and the Dolomites.
Then, it’s downhill, sometimes on cobbles that are hundred years old (only in the bends) to Kranjska Gora. Once arrived at this World Cup location, I always treat myself to an espresso and a little cake. Then, it’s back into Austria over the Wurzenpass. From the Slovenian side it is quite easy, but what follows is one of the fastest descents in the Alps. My highest speed here is 112 km/h. I don’t recommend you try and equal this, because the road isn’t in such good condition any more (at least not for such high speeds). The last kilometres are great as a run-out. After a dip in the Faakersee lake, you feel completely regenerated after a few hours.
